Why the Right Underlay Makes a Quieter Floor

The right underlay is the unsung hero of a great floating floor. It is essential for comfort, durability, and sound reduction. If you live in an apartment or multi-level home, underlay dramatically reduces footfall noise. We stock a wide range of options, from standard pads to full acoustic systems for floating floors, and from budget-friendly to luxurious foam or rubber carpet underlays. Trust our floor fixing service to handle the details. Fulfilling your strata by-laws’s acoustic requirements doesn’t have to be stressful. Notify your strata corporation of your intention to install a floating floor. Then bring their specifications to us when you choose your floor; we’ll match you with the best underlay for compliance and then ensure a quiet, compliant installation. It all begins with expert guidance from our specialised floor fixing service that is designed to navigate these exact challenges.

Why the Right Underlay Makes a Quieter Floor

One honest note: no underlay can guarantee a rating on its own, because performance depends on your specific slab, ceiling and build-up — only an on-site test proves a result. What we can do is match you with products that have the test data behind them to give you the best chance of compliance, and take the stress out of the paperwork. Prefer a floor that arrives quiet out of the box? Many hybrid floors come with pre-attached acoustic underlay that meets 5–6 star requirements.

Meeting Your Strata's Acoustic Requirements in Sydney

If you live in an apartment, unit or townhouse, your building almost certainly has rules about floor noise — and getting them wrong can mean tearing a brand-new floor back up. Here’s how it works, and how we make it painless.

Most Sydney strata schemes measure floor noise using the AAAC Acoustic Star Rating system, which runs from 2 to 6 stars — the higher the star rating, the quieter the floor. In practice, most apartment buildings require a 5-star rating, and some stricter by-laws call for 6 stars. Behind those stars sit impact-noise measurements like Ln,w and L’nT,w (lower numbers mean less noise passes through to the unit below), and the National Construction Code sets a baseline for new buildings — but your strata by-laws can be tougher, so they’re what you need to check first.
